Neglecting Generosity

Generosity flows from a heart that’s experienced the goodness and provision of God. But when we hold tightly to what we have — whether money, time, or resources — and rarely give, we miss out on the freedom and joy that come from reflecting God’s generous heart. Neglecting generosity can show up in small choices, like avoiding giving to those in need, or in bigger patterns that reveal how much we truly trust God to provide for us and others.

Spiritually, generosity isn’t just about giving — it’s about what we believe about God’s provision for us and for the world. When we cling to security, we can miss the invitation to participate in the abundant life Jesus offers — a life marked by grace, compassion, and open hands. But the gospel calls us into a different rhythm: one where our hearts are shaped by Christ’s generosity toward us and where giving becomes a joyful expression of trust, not obligation.

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

— 2 CORINTHIANS 9:6–7

There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

— PROVERBS 11:24–25

Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

— LUKE 12:33
