Sins of Material Commission
Some sins involve not just what we do inwardly, but how our actions affect the people and world around us. Sins of material commission refer to choices that harm others through greed, theft, dishonest gain, and exploitation. These behaviors don’t just break rules — they damage trust, strain relationships, and signal deeper heart struggles. You may see them outwardly, but they often begin with internal patterns of fear, comparison, or self-protection that lead to choices leaving pain in their wake.
Spiritually, these patterns take us away from the way of Jesus — who calls us to generosity, honesty, justice, and peace. Material sins don’t just hurt others; they distort our soul’s sense of safety, worth, and community. The gospel offers a way back through honest reflection, repentance, and the transforming grace of Christ. In Him, we discover freedom from harmful patterns, restored relationships, and a life that increasingly reflects God’s compassion, integrity, and generosity toward others.
Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
— Luke 12:15
Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights? For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
— Micah 6:11–12
