SINS OF ENSLAVEMENT

Compulsive Behaviors

Compulsive behaviors are patterns we feel driven to repeat, even when we know they are unhealthy or unwise. These behaviors often promise comfort, control, or escape, but over time they begin to control us instead. Compulsions can show up in many forms—such as overeating or emotional eating, social media, compulsive gaming, gambling, binge-watching, shopping, or other repetitive habits that are hard to stop. What they share in common is not the behavior itself, but the loss of self-control and the way they quietly shape our desires, attention, and daily lives.

Jesus does not shame us for what controls us—He invites us into freedom. Compulsive behaviors often point to deeper longings beneath the surface: a desire for relief, belonging, rest, or peace. Through repentance, renewed trust in God, and Spirit-led formation, those desires can be reshaped. Freedom is rarely instant and is often formed through honest confession, Scripture, prayer, and supportive relationships. As you take steps of obedience, God works to restore self-control, peace, and wholeness, forming you into someone who lives from freedom rather than compulsion.

"I have the right to do anything,” you say — but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything” — but I will not be mastered by anything.

— 1 CORINTHIANS 6:12

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

— 2 TIMOTHY 1:7

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above.

— COLOSSIANS 3:1
