Sins of the Tounge
Words are extraordinarily powerful — they can build up, heal wounds, or tear down trust and connection. Sins of the tongue are patterns of speech that harm others, distort truth, and reflect deeper heart issues. These sins don’t always look dramatic; sometimes they show up in casual jokes that wound, repeated criticism that isolates, or careless words that fracture relationships. Yet Scripture is clear: what flows from the mouth reveals what is in the heart, and transforming the heart is at the center of discipleship.
Jesus invites us into a new way of living with our words, rooted not in self-protection or self-expression, but in love, truth, and grace. Healing from harmful speech begins with honest repentance, trusting Jesus with what is in your heart, and growing through intentional practices that shape speech over time. As you walk this journey, God can form in you patience, self-control, and wisdom. Sonrise Church is here to walk alongside you with prayer, biblical guidance, and community as you pursue transformation in your words and relationships.
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up.
— Ephesians 4:29
So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
— James 3:5–6
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
— Proverbs 18:21
