Sins of Material Omission
Omission isn’t always about what we do — sometimes it’s about what we don’t do. Material omission refers to the ways we can overlook or ignore opportunities to live out what God has called us to — whether it’s showing mercy, offering generosity, pursuing justice, obeying God’s voice, or serving others in need. These omissions may not make headlines, but they shape the health of our hearts and the influence we have on the people around us.
Spiritually, failing to act when God invites us into love and service can leave us feeling distant from God’s purpose for our lives. You may sense a tug toward compassion or obedience but hesitate, delay, or choose convenience instead — and over time that pattern can dull your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. But the gospel doesn’t leave us stuck in inertia. Jesus calls us into a life of hope, action, and transformation — where the choices we make reflect His heart and lead to deeper joy, peace, and connection with God and others.
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
— James 4:17
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
— Matthew 25:45
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
— Proverbs 3:27
