Greed & Covetousness
Greed and covetousness show up when what you don’t have begins to shape what you desire, pursue, or compare yourself to. You might find your thoughts drawn to what others own, constantly calculating what you need next, or feeling unsettled even when you have enough. These inner stirrings may feel normal, but over time they can blind you to gratitude, distort your priorities, and fuel discontent that never seems fully satisfied.
Spiritually, greed squeezes out the joy God intends for you, replacing it with a restless pursuit of more — more money, more status, more possessions, more security. Instead of finding satisfaction in God’s provision, your heart can become tethered to endless want. But the good news of the gospel invites you into a different rhythm: a life of contentment grounded not in accumulating things, but in trusting the God who provides. When Jesus reshapes your desires, you discover peace that doesn’t depend on possessions but on His presence.
Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
— Luke 12:15
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
— Exodus 20:17
He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
— Ecclesiastes 5:10
