Practices That Shape Your Heart
Following Jesus isn’t just about what we believe—it’s about who we’re becoming. Over time, our hearts are shaped by what we return to each day: what we listen to, what we prioritize, and what we practice. Simple rhythms like reading the Bible, praying, worshiping, and resting help us stay connected to Jesus and open to His work in us. These practices aren’t about earning God’s love; they’re ways of making space for grace to form us from the inside out.
As these rhythms take root, they begin to reshape everyday life—how we respond to stress, how we love people, how we use our time and money, and how we handle temptation and sin. Some practices help us draw near to God (like prayer and Scripture), others help us live outwardly with purpose (like serving, giving, and sharing our faith), and others help restore us (like Sabbath and fasting). Wherever you’re starting, explore these practices and take one simple next step toward deeper growth with Jesus.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
— James 1:22-25
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me… whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.
— John 15:4–5
Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
— 1 Timothy 4:7-8
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
— Psalm 119:9-11
