FOLLOW JESUS

Through Physical Health

Our physical bodies are an everyday part of following Jesus. Strength, illness, pain, aging, limitations, and healing all shape how we experience life and faith. Physical health can influence our emotions, relationships, productivity, and even how we relate to God.

Following Jesus in physical health doesn’t mean idolizing fitness or feeling shame over weakness. It means learning to steward our bodies with wisdom, receive our limitations with humility, and trust God through both strength and struggle. This page is here to help you reflect on how physical health is shaping you—and how God may be forming endurance, gratitude, and trust through it.

Self-Reflection on Physical Health

Physical health shapes us over time. This reflection can help you notice how your body is affecting your heart—and where God may be at work.

Signs of Healthy Formation
  • You view your body as a gift to steward, not a measure of worth
  • Limitations are met with humility rather than shame
  • Health decisions are guided by wisdom, balance, and prayer
  • Gratitude grows for what your body can do in each season
  • Dependence on God increases through weakness or strength
Signs Something Is Off
  • Physical health becomes a source of identity or control
  • Illness or limitation leads to shame, frustration, or isolation
  • Comparison fuels dissatisfaction with your body
  • Neglect or overcontrol replaces wise stewardship
  • Fear dominates decisions around health or the future

The Lord sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health.

— PSALM 41:3

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

— ISAIAH 53:4-5

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

— 2 CORINTHIANS 12:9-10

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

— 1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-20

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases.

— PSALM 103:2-3

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

— JAMES 5:14-15

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

— ROMANS 8:22-23
