Through Mental Health
Struggles with mental health are more common than many people realize. Anxiety, depression, fear, burnout, and emotional pain can affect anyone—often quietly and invisibly—leaving people feeling misunderstood, ashamed, or unsure of how faith fits into what they’re carrying. If you are struggling with your mental health, you are not broken or forgotten. What you’re carrying matters, and you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Following Jesus through mental health challenges does not mean ignoring pain or pretending everything is fine. It means bringing our whole selves before God—our questions, fears, exhaustion, and hope—and trusting that He meets us with compassion. God is not distant from emotional suffering; He is near, patient, and faithful, even when healing feels slow or unclear.
Mental Health Self-Reflection
Use the reflections below not to judge yourself, but to notice what patterns may be shaping you.
Signs of Healthy Formation
- Greater honesty with God and trusted others about how you’re really doing
- Increased willingness to seek help, support, or rest when needed
- Small but meaningful steps toward hope, even in difficult seasons
Signs Something Is Off
- Isolation begins to feel safer than connection
- Shame or fear keeps you from sharing what you’re carrying
- Emotional pain turns inward, leading to hopelessness or harsh self-criticism
- You feel pressure to pretend everything is fine to avoid discomfort
- Pain is spiritualized rather than honestly acknowledged and addressed
- Self-reliance makes it difficult to ask for help or receive care
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
— MATTHEW 11:28-30
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
— PSALM 42:11
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
— ISAIAH 41:10
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
— 1 PETER 5:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
— PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
— PSALM 147:3
For the Lord will not cast off forever, for, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men.
— LAMENTATIONS 3:31-33
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Mental health challenges affect people from all walks of life, including those who are deeply committed to their faith. Anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, and stress can impact relationships, work, and spiritual life, often leaving people feeling isolated or unsure where to turn for help. These struggles are real and deserve compassion, care, and understanding.
Following Jesus through mental health challenges does not mean ignoring symptoms or forcing positivity. Scripture invites believers to bring their burdens honestly before God, trusting His presence even when clarity or relief feels distant. Faith becomes a daily practice of dependence—through prayer, rest, community, and wise support.
At Sonrise Church in Santee, California, we walk alongside individuals and families throughout East County San Diego, including El Cajon, Lakeside, and surrounding communities, who are navigating mental health challenges. We believe God uses everyday life, including emotional struggles, to form us into people who grow in humility, compassion, and trust. You are not alone—help, hope, and community are available.
