The Pruning Process | John 15:1-5

In John 15, spoken during His farewell discourse, Jesus teaches that apart from Him, we can do nothing. The message explains that to “abide” means to stay, remain, and live in constant connection with Jesus—trusting His way over our own. When we abide in Him, our lives naturally bear spiritual fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, and other visible reflections of God’s character. Yet abiding isn’t always easy because it requires surrender, humility, and submission to the “Jesus way,” especially when comfort, pride, or hurt tempt us to pull away.

This message focuses on the process of pruning—God’s loving removal of things that hinder growth. It teaches that pruning is not punishment but preparation. God prunes selfishness, bitterness, lust, fear, and other habits or attitudes that infect the heart, not to take from us but to train us toward greater faith and fruitfulness. The message challenges us to look honestly at our lives and ask what needs pruning, trusting that even when it’s painful, God’s pruning produces stronger, more Christ-like lives.
