FOLLOW JESUS

Through Parenting

Parenting is one of the most formative and demanding responsibilities many people will ever carry. It exposes our limits, stretches our patience, and often confronts us with situations we cannot control or fix. For many parents, the weight of responsibility can feel overwhelming, isolating, or filled with quiet fear.

Following Jesus through parenting does not mean getting everything right. It means learning to walk with God through uncertainty, surrender outcomes we cannot control, and trust that He is at work—not only in our children’s lives, but in our own hearts as well. If parenting feels heavier than you expected, you are not failing; you may be standing in a place where God is inviting you to rely on Him more deeply. Growth in this season is often slow, quiet, and unseen—but God is faithful in the process.

Parenting Self-Reflection

Use the reflections below not to judge yourself, but to notice what patterns may be shaping you.

Signs of Healthy Formation
  • Increased reliance on God rather than self-confidence or control
  • Greater patience with your children and yourself
  • A growing ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally
Signs Something Is Off
  • Fear or anxiety begins to dominate decision-making
  • Your sense of worth rises and falls with your children’s behavior
  • Exhaustion leaves little room for grace, patience, or perspective
  • Control is disguised as responsibility
  • Comparison is masked as concern
  • Perfectionism is framed as love

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

— JOSHUA 24:15

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

— PROVERBS 22:6

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

— GALATIANS 6:9

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

— JAMES 1:5

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

— PSALM 127:1

Parenting is one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences in life. Many parents face seasons of stress, uncertainty, exhaustion, and fear as they navigate raising children in a complex world. From discipline and decision-making to emotional strain and unmet expectations, parenting often brings trials that test patience, faith, and endurance. These challenges can feel especially heavy when families are navigating them alone, without a trusted community or spiritual foundation.

Following Jesus through parenting does not remove difficulty, but it offers a different foundation. Scripture invites parents to trust God’s wisdom, depend on His strength, and release the pressure to control outcomes. Parenting becomes a place where faith is practiced daily—through prayer, humility, repentance, and grace. Whether you are raising toddlers, navigating the teen years, or seeking wisdom for adult children, God is present in the struggle, shaping both your heart and your story through it.

At Sonrise Church in Santee, California, we believe God uses everyday life—including parenting—to form us into people who look more like Jesus. We walk alongside parents and families throughout East County San Diego, including El Cajon, Lakeside, and surrounding communities, offering faith-centered encouragement, resources, and relationships. Through community, mentoring, and discipleship pathways, Sonrise provides a place where parents can find support, grow in faith, and take meaningful next steps—one conversation, one prayer, and one step at a time.
