FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

Kindness

Biblical kindness flows from God’s own character. It is not driven by convenience, personality, or politeness, but by a heart shaped by mercy and love. Kindness moves toward others with compassion, patience, and grace — especially when it is undeserved or inconvenient.

As an outcome of following Jesus, kindness grows as we learn to see people the way God sees them. Over time, the Spirit reshapes our responses so that kindness becomes a natural expression of a transformed heart rather than a forced behavior.

Self-Reflections

Use the reflections below not to judge yourself, but to notice what patterns may be shaping your kindness.

Signs of growing kindness may include:

  • Responding to others with compassion rather than irritation
  • Speaking and acting with gentleness, even in disagreement
  • A growing sensitivity to the needs and struggles of others

Kindness may be strained when:

  • Frustration or impatience shapes how you treat people
  • Kindness feels conditional on how others behave
  • Self-protection outweighs compassion

Kindness is often counterfeited by:

  • Politeness without genuine care
  • Avoiding conflict rather than loving others well
  • Performative niceness that seeks approval

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

— COLOSSIANS 3:12-13

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

— EPHESIANS 4:32

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

— LUKE 6:35

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

— MICAH 6:8

SHAPING KINDNESS

What Often Undermines Kindness

When kindness weakens, it often reveals a heart growing guarded or self-focused. Kindness erodes when compassion gives way to resentment, impatience, or unresolved relational tension. Common disruptors include:
